About this coloring page
Off on an underwater ride, a mermaid sits on the patterned shell of a smiling sea turtle. Shell plates, flippers and fins add many pieces, making it a detailed page.
The shapes on the turtle's shell are called scutes, and they are made of keratin, the same tough material as your fingernails. Unlike many land turtles, sea turtles cannot pull their heads inside their shells. Coloring each scute separately, with a thin dark line left between them, gives the shell a neat, tiled look.
Fun factSea turtles swim in the ocean but come ashore to lay their eggs in nests dug in sandy beaches.
- Color ideaColor the turtle's shell plates in two greens and give the mermaid a coral pink tail.
- After coloringImagine where the turtle is taking the mermaid and draw the place they arrive.
